Circus Skills You Can Master

Circus workshops offer a variety of skills for participants to master. Each skill brings its own set of challenges and rewards. They cater to diverse interests and abilities.

Many workshops start with fundamental skills. Participants can learn to juggle or balance, setting the stage for more advanced techniques. These foundational skills enhance coordination and focus.

Below is a brief description of some of the skills we teach during a circus workshop.

Juggling

Juggling is the art of throwing and catching. Usually done with 3 or more balls, juggling scarves or batons but we have devised numerous tricks and exercises using only 1 and 2 objects to develop the coordination in a fun way which enables the progression to  move onto bigger numbers.

Juggling scarves are light and easy to catch; an ideal way to start for those that may struggle with coordination

Ball juggling is very varied and can incorporate catches on the head, back etc as well as rolling techniques and 100’s of tricks using any number of balls ranging from absolute novice to impossible looking feats of skill for more dedicated jugglers

Baton juggling is much more challenging as the throws have to be more accurate to enable the correct catch and avoid the other batons in the air. They can also be used for balancing, spinning and twirling tricks.

Ring juggling is often used for world record number juggling due to their thin design meaning lots can fit into a small area while being thrown into the air. The ring shape can also be used to perform some unusual tricks as they can be caught over the head, legs and arms through the center. They can also be used for isolation effects similar to contact juggling or staff manipulation. Excellent for juggling exercises in groups

Contact juggling uses solid balls to roll around the body or isolate their positions to create a magical floating display. Difficult to master but a little patience can result in a very visually stunning effect.

Diabolo

Diabolo dates back to China during  the three kingdoms period 220-280. It has evolved since then but was used as a toy and performance prop in its current form since at least 1905 when it was first patented. It remains just as popular today. A favorite with the older generation who will remember it from their childhood. It involves manipulating and throwing an egg cup shaped object using a string connecting 2 sticks. Relatively easy to get started and do the basics and great for playing with friends as you can pass the diabolo from person to person.

Flower Sticks (aka Devil Sticks)

One of our favorites for teaching as it can be used for very simple but gratifying effects that even a 2 year old can attempt but also more difficult moves for those who want a little challenge which look fantastic after only a short practise.

Feather Balancing

Brilliant fun for everyone! Anything can be used to balance on the finger/nose/foot/etc but feathers are perfect for learning as they fall very slowly and help learn the mechanics of balancing gradually.

Spinning Poi

A Maori invention used by dancers, it is now a world-wide activity often using flames to create patterns in the air. A ball attached to a string is spun around the body with one in each hand. The basic movements are attainable for anyone but the advanced moves take a lot of practice especially when used to accompany dancing. Easily made at home by placing a ball inside a long sock.
